This North Texas Giving Day, Help End Homelessness

North Texas Giving Day is a very important day for us, at MDHA, in our effort to end homelessness. How much should you give to MDHA on September 14, 2017? Here are some suggestions. (You can donate multiples of these numbers too!)

$103.53. $103.53 allowed Jonathan to reconnect his electricity, and avoid a return to homelessness (and a miserable Christmas).

$120.75. $120.75 allowed Daniel and Karla to remain housed, Abraham to pursue a job, and Richard to become eligible for a housing voucher. No, not $120.75 each; $120.75 total.

$95, $149, $200. $95, $149, $200, respectively, allowed Kisha, Sarah and Laura to move from shelter into housing.

This North Texas Giving Day, Give to What Works

Research shows that the only way to make real social progress is through collective impact – many organizations working together to achieve common goals. Research further shows that you need a strong backbone organization to lead the collective impact, in order for it to work. 

MDHA is a backbone organization. We partner with many organizations to work on a specific goal: Making homelessness rare, brief and non-recurring. That means that we never ask, "What's another cool program we can create?" We always ask, "What proven solutions will help us achieve our goal?"

In the last 18 months alone, we have made tremendous progress in implementing proven solutions that will help us achieve that goal. So, this September 22, 2016, North Texas Giving Day, please give to what works. Help Us Make Someone’s Day!

The day we helped Solomon end his homelessness for about $200, was a great day.

The day we helped Paul end his homelessness for less than $70, was a special day.

And the day we helped Judith (and her little dog, Simon!) end her homelessness for less than $44, was a phenomenal day!

9 Easy Things You Can Do Today to Really Truly Help MDHA

I know; it is mid-summer, and you are sitting there saying to yourself, “Self, how can I help MDHA?” I am glad you asked. Here is the answer (or nine answers, really):

1. Tell three people about what we do. Use www.mdhadallas.org as a cheat sheet.

2. Read our CoC Strategic Work Plan, and find an item or task you can help us and the community with to help end homelessness in Dallas and Collin Counties.

So, Why Again Should I Give to MDHA on North Texas Giving Day?

Well, by law the only way our community can continue to get almost $17,000,000 of federal funding for housing programs for those experiencing homelessness, is if MDHA continues to exist, nay thrive. And, the federal government foots that very large $17,000,000 bill for those housing programs, but expects the community (that’s you and me!) to fund the much smaller cost of mechanism for getting it, MDHA. Beyond that, just look at what MDHA has accomplished with its partners, a 65% reduction in chronic homelessness, a 1200% increase in permanent supportive housing (PSH - 2000 units now!), and a public investment by DHA in housing 3400 formerly homeless individuals and families at an annual value of $28,000,000, and much much more. And, you know what? You ain’t seen nothing yet. We will add another 1800 units of PSH, and we will end chronic homelessness by the end of 2016; you just wait and see. That is why you should give to MDHA.
